Michael Hill found 1970s track-and-field gear in the brand’s own archive — the kind of sportswear that had lived on sidelines and in gym bags and earned its character in the process. The rugby shirt followed from there. Cut from heavy yarn-dyed cotton jersey in blocks of green and navy, with ribbed collar, hem and cuffs, and a chunky quarter-zip at the neck. Drake’s was founded in London in 1977. What began as a neckwear business has grown into something considerably more considered — a house that designs, manufactures, and sells with an unhurried focus on quality over novelty. The rugby shirt sits comfortably within that story: a garment type that Drake’s has returned to repeatedly because it makes sense, not because it is fashionable.

The rugby shirt has clear origins — a working garment, designed to be worn in contact sport without falling apart. Thick cotton, a reinforced placket, a collar that could be turned up.
