Product Details

Drake’s was founded in London in 1977. What started as a neckwear maker has, under the creative direction of Michael Hill, developed into one of the most deliberate British menswear houses in the market. The rugby shirt has become something of a signature — a category Drake’s has returned to repeatedly, not because it is fashionable, but because it continues to make sense.

The rugby shirt has working origins. It was designed to take punishment on a muddy field without falling apart — thick cotton, a reinforced collar that could be turned up against the weather, a body that could be grabbed without the seaming giving way. The utility is the point. What Drake’s has done is carry that utility intact into civilian life, and add a few considerations of their own.

This shirt is cut from 9.4oz yarn-dyed cotton jersey. The yarn dyeing happens before weaving, which gives the primary vertical stripe — red, yellow, blue and green on a white ground — its depth and resistance to fading. The cloth has the texture and presence of vintage sportswear: substantial enough to hold its shape, with a hand that softens with each wash without losing its body.

The construction references two Drake’s traditions. The collar is borrowed from the Drake’s ‘English Classic’ shirt — a polo-style collar with structure that comes from tailoring experience rather than sportswear instinct. A covered placket runs from collar to chest, fastened with rubber buttons. The body is cut slightly trimmer than a traditional rugby shirt, with higher armholes, which is what allows Michael Hill to recommend it under a blazer or, as he puts it, even a suit.

Works just as easily on its own with old chinos, selvedge denim, or canvas trousers.
